Neighbor's dog keeps growling. What can be done?
My neighbors seem like perfectly fine people. I have never really talked to them, but they have never bothered me. The cops aren't ever over there. They're quiet. They mind their own business. My problem is not with them.
But they have a dog that is constantly acting like he wants to bite me. He's tried to jump out of the back of their truck when they've driven by our house before and the kids were outside.
I walk 4 miles a day (1 mile each time, 4 times) for health reasons. Because up the street from me the OTHER way there is a vicious dog that has actually attacked me before (nothing was done about it, despite notifying the police), I walk the way that goes by their house, instead. This dog is often unleashed and will run up to me growling and snarling, though he has never bitten. A couple times, he's growled at first then smiled when I spoke to him. Other times, when he does it and I speak to him, the growling gets worse.
I don't want them to have to get rid of their dog. It's obvious they love him very much and he has not actually hurt me, but I'm scared of him, mostly because of what happened with the other neighbor and their dog.
I hate to be that annoying neighbor that complains to them about it because, like I said, they seem nice and I don't want trouble. I also won't involve the police or animal control unless I get bit and have to because I don't want them to lose their dog. But it's to the point where I'm out of directions to walk in and I need to walk. Going to the park to walk every day is not an option because I have to do it in 4 trips and the timing doesn't work, especially with kids.
Where we live is technically within city limits, so there is a leash law, but we're so far at the edge of what is considered the city limits that it's actually more rural. There are maybe 6 occupied houses in this 4 mile stretch of road. I keep my dog fenced to protect him from the other dogs, but I'm the only one on this street that does keep their dog contained. The leash law is really not enforced here.
Any advice?
If it matters, the dog that growls and stuff is a rottweiler, so I'm fully aware that he's probably a lot meaner-looking than he actually is. I'm just terrified because I've still got some PTSD from the last attack.
I don't walk on their property. I walk on the other side of the road and their dog crosses the road and comes at me.
The only thing that I can recommend is that you talk to your neighbors about the dog. If you're really scared, then you need to protect yourself from any outside danger. If you're neighbors choose not to respect your wishes, than you should contact your local authorities, such as the police or animal control, and report the potential threat. Hope this helps.

Me personally I would carry pepper spray and at the first sign of attack let loose. He needs to be actually approaching you though. If he is fenced or not approaching and you go out of your way to mace him, this is wrong.
This is one of those gray areas.
You could try talking to the neighbor but what are they going to do, put him in $100 a pop behavior classes? Not likely.
Try to see the situation from every angle. Do not be afraid to call the cops if it makes sense. You need to keep a couple of things in mind. These situations can quickly escalate into a neighbor dispute. Lastly neighbors will call the cops on you and lie, you read about it all the time on YA. Thats one reason you have to play this smart i.e. do not walk onto their property and mace the dog.

Ask them about pepper spray - it's polite - or take a water gun. Also if there are certain times you go walking, inform them that you would be happy if they made sure that their dog was inside around those times.

As you can see I own rottweilers - and usually have quite a few here, but I would NEVER EVER allow my dogs to be able to get to someone walking down the street.
I find this behavior totally appalling and really don't understand how anyone gets away with it or expects to.
Dogs should ALWAYS be secured within their back garden - NO EXCUSES.
If you really find these people approachable then I would have a word with them and see what they have to say. They really should understand.
Sorry about all the capital letters but I truly find this beyond belief that dogs are allowed this freedom.
I don't blame you for being worried and not because it is a rottie -- but because it is a dog. All dogs can bite.

Ask them to have the dog leashed or inside during the times you will be walking by. Or to step outside and control the dog. I know you may not want to involve anyone, but if you don't and he does bite you it could be a lot worse. They may have to get rid of it. If it were me I would want you to ask me to do something about it if you are not ok with it. They should @ least be attempting to do something anyways without you having to say anything.

so they are leaving this dog outside and unattended with no fence and no leash? that is completely irresponsible! no potentially aggressive dog should be outside unattended without a fence or a leash! you need to either talk to the neighbors or call the cops. these people may be nice, but they are not responsible dog owners (unattended aggressive dog and letting it ride in the bed of a truck).
